Mr Jim Burke

Town Councillor & Chairman of Buildings and Facilities Committee

My name is Jim Burke; I was pleased to begin serving as a councillor when elected in May 2007. As well as serving on the Town Council I serve as a member of the Burials Committee and the Buildings Committee.

My relationship with the Potton area began in 1978, when I was appointed as a teacher at Sandy Upper School. After nearly 25 years at the school; enjoying the challenges that upper school education presents, I moved to Burgoyne Middle School in the summer of 2002. Two years full time teaching saw some exciting times with the innovation of the Classroom of the Future project, an incredible leap forwards in the information technology in the school, as well as the day to day development of the enthusiastic children in the school. I did a further two years of part time teaching at Burgoyne, as my wife Liz and I began to pastor Potton Vineyard Church in July 2004; I stopped teaching at Burgoyne after the summer of 2007 to focus on leading the church.

Family Burke moved to Potton in 1986 after living in Sandy and Gamlingay, we are passionate about building community in this town and surrounding area. Our three children all went ‘through the local schools’, this gave their very different personalities a chance to flourish. Rachel 24, is a teacher in Bedfordshire, Sarah 22 has just graduated in events management and Helen 20 is a stylist at Lesly Elliot’s hair salon in Potton. I love to support the wide variety of local events, from being booed and hissed at in the Playhouse pantomime to having some varied roles in local sports clubs over the years. The town’s incredible celebrations for Millennium, Golden Jubilee saw an opportunity not to be missed and so far the community has been happy to extend their desire to get together and ‘be community’ by supporting Party On Potton.

What do I bring to the Town Council? A desire to selflessly serve this community and try to make Potton a better place, for all sections of our community.
